VIDEO: Pro-Syrian Army forces and Kurdish fighters join ranks in Afrin, call for unity against invaders
BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:10 P.M.) – On Tuesday, Syrian pro-government units of the National Defence Forces entered the region of Afrin as part of an intervention to support local Kurdish fighters in their battle against the Turkish Army and militant groups under its command.
The entry of Syrian forces into Afrin was initially contested by the Turkish Army who shelled near the advance route of government columns in an attempt to scare them off.
Despite reports from Turkish officials (including President Erdogan himself) that the shelling pushed pro-government forces to abandon their intervention, the reality is that many hundreds of Syrian troops – supported by armor and artillery – entered Afrin, reaching the regional capital (the city of Afrin) with several hours.
Upon their arrival in Afrin city, Syrian troops were greeted happily by Kurdish forces. Not long after, both factions joined ranks to publicly issue a statement of unity among all Syrians against foreign aggressors.
