Graphic pictures: Scores of Al-Qaeda militants slayed during botched assault on besieged Shiite-majority towns in Syria’s Idlib
BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:35 P.M.) – On Saturday, Al-Qaeda-linked jihadist militants in northern Idlib province attempted to break through government lines at the long-besieged Shiite-majority towns of Fouaa and Kafraya.
The assault, described as an infiltration operation by local military-affiliated sources who first reported the event, was stopped dead in its tracks by local Syrian pro-government troops defending both towns.
Within a very brief engagement time, local Syrian forces gunned down at least 15 jihadists. The remaining Al-Qaeda attackers were sent running from the battlefield under a hail of machine gun and mortar fire.
The militants attempting to storm Fouaa and Kafraya belonged to Ha’yat Tahrir al-Sham (better known by its former name, Jabhat al-Nusra). Followers of the group (and other Salafist jihadist militias in Syria) have marked the towns’ mostly Shiite population for extermination, believing them to be apostates.
