Georgian Prime Minister quits amid mass protests

BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:30 A.M.) – Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvil announced his resignation via an official statement in Tbilisi on Wednesday, amid mass protests that have engulfed the country since May 31.

Explaining the motives behind him stepping down, Kvirikashvil referred to disagreements with his colleagues, in particular the leader of the Georgian ruling Dream Party Bidzina Ivanishvili.

“I want to stress that we have been at odds with Head of the Party [Bidzina Ivanishvili, Georgian Dream Party leader] over some fundamental issues for the last several months,” he said.

From Kvirikashvili’s perspective, the resignation give his party’s leader the chance to shape the team “as he sees it.”

The prime minister’s departure comes at a time of widespread protests in Georgia over the handling of an investigation into the stabbing of two 16-year-old David Saralidze and Levan Dadunashvili who were killed in a brawl between students from two different schools in December 2017.
